COURSE DESCRIPTION

Accredited by VETAB (NSW Government Vocational Educational and Training Accreditation Board) this Certificate IV in TESOL course has been developed to mirror the syllabus of the University of Cambridge CELTA course. It is a highly practical course which introduces you to current teaching methods, practical teaching ideas and a range of TESOL resources.

 
Course Information:
DESIGNED FOR:   Native English or highly proficient speakers who want to enter the English language teaching profession. It is also suitable for experienced teachers who want to further develop their communicative teaching skills through the strong focus on practical teaching.

Certification is issued by International House Sydney – Teacher Training Centre upon successful completion of the course. Trainees who complete part of the programme will be issued with a statement of attainment outlining the competencies that they achieved.ANTA Logo

 
STUDY PATHWAYS:   Graduates of the Certificate IV in TESOL can gain one subject credit towards further TESOL studies at the University of Canberra. Candidates must apply separately to the university.

 
COURSE CONTENT:   TESOL methodology & language analysis including:
  • teaching speaking, writing, reading, listening skills
  • developing learner’s language knowledge
  • preparing language lessons using reference materials
  • planning and evaluation of lessons
  • evaluating TESOL teaching materials for classroom use
  • managing the English language classroom
  • managing the teaching and learning environment
  • developing teacher professionalism
  • understanding different learner styles and motivation to teaching
  • applying knowledge of learner cultural and linguistic backgrounds to teaching
  • using basic concepts and grammar terminology
  • using basic lexical and phonological terminology
  • six hours observation of qualified teachers
  • six hours of observed and assessed teaching practice
  • English language development lessons for students completing the eight week full time course

 
ASSESSMENT:  
  • You will be required to complete six hours of assessed teaching practice, conducted with real classes.
  • You will also complete assessed written assignments.
  • There is no final examination.

 
ENTRY CRITERIA:  
  • Pre-advanced to native English level (120 hour course)
  • All candidates must be at least 18 years of age.
  • You are not required to have previous teaching experience or the ability to speak a second language.

 
COURSE LENGTH:  

Pre-advanced to native English level (120 hour course)

  • 4-5 weeks full-time
  • 12 weeks part-time plus an additional 80 hours of reading, lesson preparation and assignments

 
TRAINERS:   All of our trainers are:
  • post-graduate industry qualified
  • experienced teacher trainers with an average of 10 years experience

 
APPLY FOR THIS COURSE:   If you are unsure of your proficiency and you are in Singapore, please come in for a level test on Mondays or Wednesdays at 2.30pm.

  • sections A & B (Questions 1,2 & 3) of the application form
  • signed terms and conditions and indemnity and release
  • current resume
  • copies of certificates, diplomas and / or university degrees
  • 2 passport photos
Shortlisted applicants will be contacted for an interview. (For applicants outside Singapore the interview can be conducted on the telephone/Skype. Enrolment is subject to successful completion of the interview.

The interview is in two parts. Part one is a language aptitude task. Candidates who complete part one successfully will continue to part two. Part two is a discussion of the language task, ideas about teaching and learning, details about the course curriculum/ structure and an opportunity for candidates to ask further questions.

 
COURSE FEES:  
  • SGD$5000
  • An Application fee of $500 is required to secure your position on the course. The deposit is not due until successful completion of the enrolment interview. The balance of fees is due two weeks prior to course commencement.

 
COURSE DURATION:  
  • Full Time - 4 Weeks; Monday to Friday, 9.30am - 5.30pm
  • Part time - 12 weeks;

              Tuesday and Thursday, 9:00am - 2.30pm;
              Saturday and Sunday, 9:00am - 2:30pm

Teaching practice preparation with your trainer Discuss your next teaching practice lesson plan with your tutor to ensure that you feel confident and prepared.
11.45pm-1:00pm   Teaching Practice

Put the skills that you are learning into practice. You will teach a total of six hours of observed and assessed teaching practicum.
1.00pm-2.00pm   Teaching Practice Feedback and further methodology input

Your tutor will provide detailed feedback on the strengths and weaknesses that you demonstrated in the classroom during your teaching practice sessions.
